The Charmes” is a garage-rock/post-punk band. They play their own music, and the distinctiveness of their music makes them stand out from any other bands. Their works can be described as rebellious, live, and organic. These talented lads play tumultuous music which can be enigmatic in many ways. This band just wants to get out and play their own music, and walk by their own style with hardly any care about what others think of them in any way. It’s all about the music for these young lads.
The band was formed late 2006 by four close friends from Marikina City, Philippines. Brian Josef (Vocalist/Guitars/Song-writer), wanted to create a band that would be his true musical outlet, and at the same time be comfortable with the members of the band. In order for that to happen, he thought to recruit his high school friend JB Bulan (Lead Guitarist). The two gave it a try, and it totally clicked. The next step was to look for the drummer and a bassist that would best suit their musical style. The answer was easy, they recruited Jerome Abello (Drummer), who like Brian and JB, also went to the same school. The last member to join was Jiggers Vergel de dios (Bassist), a dropout from the same school. With a complete lineup, they decided to move forward and released a 5 track EP entitled “New Old Junk” which they sold during gigs. The EP featured their song “Leave the lights off” which garnered respectable radio airplay and was declared “Red Horse In The Raw Standout Track” for 3 consecutive weeks. It was also featured in Tokyo, Japan for Radio Enkai Indies Tokyo. Their second single, the moody “In This hotel” also garnered radio airplay. Another track from the said EP entitled “Turn You On” had also been featured in Chicago via WHPK 88.5 FM through their “Chicago Is The World” segment.
Despite the absence of a full length release, they have already secured high profile gigs and have already won the College band of the year at the prestigious NU 107 Rock Awards in 2009. At present, the band has released its self titled debut album under Terno Recordings which had garnered critical acclaim and has also been featured on the British station BBC. The group had also released singles such as “Thunderclap” and “Dangerous Girl” to good reviews. They are also working on their sophomore album which is being produced by UDD’s Ean Mayor.
